Cardinals Wellemeyer seeks fifth straight win
Jun 5, 2008 - 2:18 PM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Todd Wellemeyer seeks to extend his career-best winning streak to five games on Thursday as the St. Louis Cardinals open a day-night doubleheader with the Washington Nationals. The National League Pitcher of the Month for May, Wellemeyer (6-1, 3.16 ERA) has jump-started his career after being designated for assignment by the lowly Kansas City Royals last spring.
The 29-year-old Wellemeyer is 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA in his last six starts. The righthander limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to one run and six hits in seven innings of a 5-4 victory on Friday. Wellemeyer was scheduled to pitch on Wednesday before the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Cardinals' offense may struggle to give Wellemeyer much support without slugger Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel in the lineup. Pujols suffered a calf injury in a 6-1 win over Washington on Tuesday and Ankiel has been bothered by a infected knee.
Manager Tony La Russa said Pujols will miss both games of the doubleheader. Ankiel, who suffered the injury while making a diving catch on Sunday, is day-to-day.
John Lannan (4-5, 3.52) takes the hill for Washington. Lannan allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, but did not factor into the decision in a 5-2 loss to San Diego on Thursday. Lannan has gone 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA in his last three starts, but has received just four runs of support in that span.
