Final/10
Perez will try to end struggles vs. Padres
Jun 7, 2008 - 2:10 PM NY Mets (30-30) at San Diego (26-37) 10:05 p.m. EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The erratic Oliver Perez takes the hill aiming to put the worst start of his career behind him as the New York Mets continue a four-game series with the San Diego Padres on Saturday.
The Mets entered the series having won seven of nine, but have been shut down in consecutive games. On Thursday, Scott Shoeneweis hit Paul McAnulty with a pitch in the ninth inning to force in the game-winning run in a 2-1 loss, and the Padres' Randy Wolf threw seven strong innings in a 2-1 victory on Friday.
The offense may have to spring to life quickly the way that Perez (4-4, 5.70 ERA) has been pitching. The lefthander was rocked for six runs and five hits in just one-third of an inning in a 10-2 loss to San Francisco on Monday. Perez has allowed 15 runs and 15 hits in his last 11 1/3 frames over his last three outings.
Cha Seung Baek (1-2, 5.60 ERA) takes the hill for San Diego, which is seeking a season-high fourth straight win. In his first start with the Padres, Baek was tagged for four runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 7-6 loss to Chicago on Monday.
