Tigers look to top Indians again

Jun 8, 2008 - 1:40 PM Cleveland (28-24) at Detroit (25-36) 1:05 pm EDT

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers hope their offense can pick up from where it left off when they meet the Cleveland Indians in the third of a four-game series on Sunday.

Marcus Thames and Edgar Renteria both homered during a six-run eighth inning to help lift the Tigers to an 8-4 victory on Saturday. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Detroit.

"I'm not going to get carried away with one game, but any game is a big game for us right now," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "We're just trying to get the ship righted."

Rookie Armando Galarraga (4-2, 3.76 ERA) gets the call for the Tigers in place of injured starter Jeremy Bonderman, who could miss the rest of the season after undergoing medical procedures related to a blood clot in his pitching shoulder.

Galarraga, who made eight starts when Dontrelle Willis went on the disabled list, was solid in his season debut against the Indians, holding them to two runs in 6 2/3 innings of a win on April 16 in Cleveland.

Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers (0-0, 5.23) is also getting an opportunity on the hill due to an injury, replacing Jake Westbrook (elbow surgery) in the rotation.

The 25-year-old lefthander is 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA through two career starts against the Tigers, who pounded Sowers for five runs in four frames of a 9-2 win here on June 3, 2007.
