Mariners hope change spark offense
Jun 10, 2008 - 1:41 PM Seattle (23-41) at Toronto (33-33) 7:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners are hoping a coaching change helps end their offensive woes.
The Mariners try to win back-to-back games for the first time since May 27-28 when they continue a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Seattle, which has scored three runs or fewer in five of their last seven games, managed to avoid a three-game losing streak by claiming a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays in 10 innings on Monday, just hours after hitting coach Jeff Pentland was fired.
He was replaced by 70-year-old Lee Elia who served as the team's hitting coach from 1993-97.
The Mariners rank 13th in the American League in batting with a .249 average and has scored just 256 runs in 64 games. Seattle's .306 on-base percentage is the lowest in the major leagues.
Dustin McGowan (4-4, 4.26 ERA) tries to keep the Mariners offense in check when he takes the mound for the Blue Jays.
McGowan allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings on Thursday, failing to factor in the decision as Toronto suffered a 9-8 loss to the New York Yankees.
Carlos Silva (3-6, 5.96), who has surrendered 24 runs in 18 2/3 innings en route to losing each of his last four starts, tries to snap a personal six-game losing streak when he counters for the Mariners on Tuesday.
