Padres shoot for sixth straight win
Jun 10, 2008 - 2:19 PM LA Dodgers (30-33) at San Diego (28-37) 10:05 p.m. EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres aim to extend their season-high winning streak to six games when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game set on Tuesday.
The Padres are coming off a four-game sweep of the New York Mets over the weekend, which included an 8-6 victory on Sunday. Tony Clark hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, lifting San Diego to its fifth straight win.
Greg Maddux (3-4, 3.48 ERA) will take the mound for the Padres, looking for his first win since May 10.
Maddux has not factored in the decision in any of his last four starts despite giving up two earned runs or less in each. The veteran righthander allowed just one run and three hits over seven innings as San Diego posted a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.
Opposing Maddux will be young lefthander Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 4.91), who is still looking for the first win of his career.
Kershaw suffered the loss in his last start, but gave up just two runs in five innings as Los Angeles lost, 2-1, to Colorado. The 20-year-old has struggled with his control lately, walking eight batters over his last two starts - a span of 8 2/3 innings.
The Dodgers enter the game losers of 10 of their last 14, including a 3-1 setback to Chicago on Sunday.
