White Sox take aim at Verlander, Tigers

Jun 11, 2008 - 12:43 PM Chi White Sox (37-27) at Detroit (27-37) 7:05 p.m. EDT

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox will be looking to bounce back from a rare defeat when they visit Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

The White Sox have been perhaps the hottest team in the majors over the past week, winning seven in a row while outscoring the opposition by a lopsided 61-24 count. But all of those victories came during a seven-game homestand and winning on the road has proven difficult.

Chicago dipped to 17-18 away from U.S. Cellular Field in the series opener on Tuesday when the Tigers held off a late charge to earn a 6-4 victory. Placido Polanco and Miguel Cabrera each had three hits in the victory.

The White Sox have a decent chance to avoid back-to-back losses given their history against Verlander. The righthander is just 1-6 with a 6.14 ERA in 10 career starts against division rival Chicago. In two losses to the Sox in April, Verlander was hammered for 15 runs - 10 earned - in 13 1/3 combined innings.

But Verlander (2-9, 5.05 ERA) has been better over the past month, compiling a 3.00 ERA and limiting opponents to a .230 batting average despite just a 1-3 record. Detroit has scored a total of 10 runs in the 25-year-old's nine losses this season.

Chicago will counter with righthander Javier Vazquez (6-4, 3.64). The veteran hurler ranks second in the American League with 81 strikeouts and earned a win in his last start despite surrendering four runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings against Minnesota.

Vazquez earned a win with seven scoreless frames against the Tigers on April 13.
