Martin, Dodgers hope to get 'lucky' again

Jun 11, 2008 - 1:42 PM LA Dodgers (31-33) at San Diego (28-38), 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- After using a little luck to win the series opener, Russell Martin and the Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping for more of the same Wednesday when they meet the San Diego Padres for the second contest of the three-game series.

Martin had three hits and drove in three runs as the Dodgers used a four-run seventh inning to topple the Padres, 7-2, on Tuesday. Martin, who opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, capitalized on a pair of fielding miscues by Padres outfielders in the decisive seventh inning.

Delwyn Young was credited with a one-out double after San Diego right fielder Brian Giles appeared to lose the ball in the lights, and Juan Pierre followed with a base hit, which appeared to be an easy flyout. However, neither center fielder Scott Hairston nor left fielder Justin Huber made a play on the ball.

After Andre Ethier walked and Jeff Kent grounded into a fielder's choice, Martin slapped a two-run single into left field to give the Dodgers a 3-2 edge. The Padres then intentionally walked James Loney, and Matt Kemp's infield single plated two more runs.

"We got lucky," Martin said. "The ball in the lights, and then the fly ball in left field. Anytime a team gives you a couple of breaks, you've got to take advantage of them. Fortunately, we did today."

Los Angeles hope Chad Billingsley (4-6, 3.57 ERA) can help maintain the club's fortunes. The 23-year-old righthander received a no decision after yielding four runs with eight strikeouts over five innings during Thursday's 5-4 setback to the Chicago Cubs.

San Diego starter Randy Wolf (4-4, 4.06) will try to continue his recent success. The lefthander is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 21 strikeouts over his previous four starts.

Wolf pitched seven frames, gave up just one run on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in Friday's 2-1 win over the New York Mets.
