Cardinals seek fifth straight win

Jun 12, 2008 - 1:11 PM St. Louis (40-27) at Cincinnati (31-36) 7:10 pm EDT

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals will try to push their winning streak to five games in the finale of a three-game

series against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

Behind impressive performances from Braden Looper and Rick Ankiel, the Cardinals coasted to a 10-0 victory on Wednesday in the first game without Albert Pujols.

The Cardinals placed Pujols on the 15-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's win after he suffered a strained calf in seventh inning of the series opener.

St. Louis' Joel Pineiro (2-3, 4.50 ERA) returns to the hill after a stint on the DL with a strained right groin. Sidelined since May 20, he threw a bullpen session on Tuesday for manager Tony LaRussa, who confirmed that Pinerio was ready for action.

"We've just got to watch (Pineiro)," LaRussa said. "He threw a very impressive bullpen. He's ready, and we need him. It's a good combination."

The righthander hasn't posted a win since beating Cincinnati at Busch Stadium on April 29, when he tossed seven scoreless frames in a 7-2 victory.

Cincinnati counters with Bronson Arroyo (4-5, 5.74), who hopes to improve on his 1-3 showing at home this season. In his last outing, Arroyo gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 frames in a no-decision at Florida on Saturday.
