Marlins visit Rays in series opener
Jun 13, 2008 - 3:55 PM Florida (36-30) at Tampa Bay (38-28), 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- A pair of surprising contenders square off Friday when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Florida Marlins in the opener of a three-game interleague series.
A perennial bottom-feeder in the American League, Tampa Bay is off to the best start in franchise history and is 2 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East.
Florida, a preseason pick to finish last in the National League East, also is off to a fast start this year and trails division-leading Philadelphia by three games.
Friday's contest will mark just the second time in 11 years that both of these in-state foes open their season series with winning records.
The Rays, who have lost six of their last nine games, give the ball to Andy Sonnanstine (6-3, 4.88 ERA) on Friday.
Sonnanstine has gone four starts without a victory, going 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA over that stretch. The righthander picked up his first career win last year vs. the Marlins, working seven strong innings in a 9-4 victory on June 10, 2007.
Florida counters with rookie righthander Ryan Tucker (1-0, 1.80), who allowed one run over five innings Sunday to beat Cincinnati in his major league debut.
The Marlins completed a 4-3 homestand Thursday with a 3-0 loss to the Phillies. Jeremy Hermida singled and walked for Florida, which managed just three hits.
