A's look for continued interleague success

Jun 13, 2008 - 4:33 PM Oakland (35-31) at San Francisco (30-37) 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The Oakland Athletics looks to improve on their impressive interleague record when they visit the San Francisco Giants on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

Including a 1-2 mark this year, Oakland has gone 114-83 since interleague play was introduced in 1997.

The win total is the most in the majors over that span, one game clear of the New York Yankees, who own interleague play's best overall record at 113-81.

Oakland will send lefthander Greg Smith (3-5, 3.74 ERA) to the mound in this rematch of the 1989 World Series - an A's sweep that was marred by a tragic earthquake during the event.

Smith has struggled a bit over his last two starts, going 0-1 and allowing 11 earned runs over 11 1/3 innings.

Barry Zito (2-9, 5.83 ERA) takes the mound for the Giants and will be seeking his first victory against his former club.

The lefthander, who departed Oakland to sign with the Giants prior to the 2007 season, has lost both previous starts against the A's, allowing 10 earned runs in just eight innings total.
