Martinez, Gabbard square off in second game

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Pedro Martinez will start for the New York Mets when they host the Texas Rangers in the second game of a double header against the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Martinez (1-0, 6.91 ERA) will be making his third start since coming off the disabled list Sunday. The three-time Cy Young Award winner got knocked around in his last start, allowing four runs and 10 hits in five innings Sunday at San Diego but did not factor in the decision.

Martinez is 13-8 with a 3.01 career ERA in 29 interleague starts and is 9-2 with a 1.90 ERA in 13 career starts against Texas.

The Rangers will counter with lefthander Kason Gabbard (1-2, 4.75), who has been pitching for Class AAA Oklahoma since the end of May. The sinkerball specialist has not earned a win since April 4 and was awful over his last three starts for Texas, going 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA while issuing 15 walks in 12 combined innings.

Gabbard is 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two career interleague starts, including a loss against Houston on May 18 in which he allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings.
