Yankees look to extend winning streak to five

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Now that Chien-Ming Wang's right foot is in a protective boot for the next six weeks, the New York Yankees will find out what life will be like without their ace.

Wang is sidelined with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon, suffered while running the bases during Sunday's victory over the Houston Astros.

Andy Pettitte (6-5, 4.64 ERA) will try to alleviate some of those worries, as he takes the mound Tuesday to begin a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Yankee Stadium.

New York will try to extend its winning streak to a season-high five games for the second time this season, when it defeated the Baltimore Orioles twice and swept a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners beginning on May 21.

San Diego, which is 11-22 on the road, enters its final road trip away from Petco Park before returning home.

Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon enters the series batting a major league-best .447 (46-for-113) since May 20.

He and the rest of the Yankees offense will take on Padres starter Randy Wolf (5-4, 3.83), who hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his past five starts.

Pettitte bounced back from allowing 10 earned runs against the Kansas City Royals on June 7 by surrendering just one run on five hits in eight strong innings at Oakland earlier last week.

He will be tested by Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who enters the series ranked first in RBI (62) and second in home runs (19) in the National League.
