Thames leads red-hot Tigers against Giants
Jun 18, 2008 - 12:44 PM Detroit (33-38) at San Francisco (31-41) 3:45 p.m. EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Marcus Thames and the Detroit Tigers go for their third straight series victory on Wednesday when they wrap up a three-game interleague set against the San Francisco Giants.
Thames and rookie Ryan Raburn both hit home runs and Kenny Rogers pitched seven outstanding innings as the Tigers claimed a 5-1 win over the Giants on Tuesday - their seventh win in the last eight games.
Thames' has homered in five consecutive games, tying the franchise record last reached by Willie Horton in 1969. The 31-year-old has 13 home runs this season.
Rookie Armando Galarraga (6-2, 3.31 ERA) looks to duplicate Rogers' success when he takes the mound for Detroit on Wednesday.
Galarraga, 26, earned his third win in his last four starts on Friday, pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five en route to a 5-0 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Barry Zito (2-10, 5.88) tries to avoid adding to his major league-leading loss total when he counters for the Giants.
Zito became the majors first 10-game loser on Friday, yielding four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings during a 5-1 setback to the Oakland Athletics.
