D-Backs' Johnson looks to avoid fourth straight loss

Jun 20, 2008 - 1:56 PM Arizona (39-34) at Minnesota (37-36) 8:10 pm. EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Randy Johnson aims to avoid losing four straight starts for the first time in nine years on Friday as the Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game interleague series with the Minnesota Twins.

Johnson, who is 12 wins shy of 300 for his career, was rocked for season highs of eight runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 12-3 loss to Kansas City on Saturday. The 44-year-old lefthander is in danger of losing four straight starts since dropping five straight from June 20 - July 10, 1999.

Johnson (4-4, 4.76 ERA) should have success against Minnesota, which he is very familiar with from his long tenure in the American League. The future Hall of Famer has won his last three starts against the Twins, while posting a 0.35 ERA in that span. However, he has not faced them since 2005 as a member of the New York Yankees.

Johnson will try and help the Diamondbacks to a third straight win after Justin Upton hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory over Oakland on Thursday.

Minnesota, which swept Washington earlier this week, counters with Scott Baker. Baker (2-2, 3.71) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of a 4-2 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday. The righthander, who has lost two straight starts, became the first Twins' pitcher to strike out four batters in one inning Sunday.
