Blue Jays looking to end six-game skid
Jun 21, 2008 - 1:34 PM Toronto (35-40) at Pittsburgh (35-39), 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays will try to snap a six-game losing streak Saturday when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series.
Toronto could not even manage a run in Friday's 1-0 setback to the Pirates, which came hours after the last-place Blue Jays fired manager John Gibbons and replaced him with former skipper Cito Gaston.
After a pitching duel between Toronto's Roy Halladay and Pittsburgh's Zach Duke, Doug Mientkiewicz scored on an error in the 12th inning to provide the game's only run.
It was a much-needed win for the interleague-challenged Pirates, who had dropped 10 of their past 11 games against American League foes - including five of their previous six.
Pittsburgh hopes lefthander Paul Maholm (4-5, 4.45 ERA) can win his third straight decision.
Maholm did not receive a decision during Sunday's 5-4 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed two runs and four hits with three walks and four strikeouts over six innings.
The Blue Jays will counter with Jesse Litsch (7-3, 3.70), who is attempting to avoid a third straight loss. The righthander was tagged for five runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 frames in Sunday's 7-4 setback to the Chicago Cubs.
