Zumaya, Tigers try to bounce back
Jun 21, 2008 - 2:08 PM Detroit (34-39) at San Diego (32-43) 10:05 p.m. EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Joel Zumaya's season debut was not what the Detroit Tigers expected.
Zumaya and the Tigers look to bounce back on Saturday when they continue a three-game interleague series against the San Diego Padres.
The 23-year-old righthander surrendered a two-run double to Scott Hairston in the eighth inning on Friday as the Padres scored four runs in the decisive frame en route to a 6-2 victory during the series opener.
It was Zumaya's first appearance after beginning 2008 on the disabled list following right shoulder surgery during the offseason. He posted a dismal 4.28 ERA in 28 games last season after registering just a 1.94 ERA during 62 games in 2006.
Nate Robertson (5-6, 5.46 ERA) hopes to avoid the bullpen altogether when he takes the mound for Detroit on Saturday.
Robertson, 30, pitched six scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three to earn his second win in as many starts during Sunday's 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Cha Seung Baek (1-1, 4.84) counters for the Padres after suffering two no decisions in his previous two starts.
