Hudson hopes matchup with hapless Mariners is beneficial
Jun 22, 2008 - 2:22 PM Seattle (26-48) at Atlanta (37-39) 1:35 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) -- Tim Hudson hopes the Seattle Mariners' ineptitude will help him pick up his first win in over three weeks on Sunday when the teams complete a three-game interleague series.
Seattle, which is a major-league worst 26-48, has become the laughing stock of baseball. In a three-day span, the Mariners fired both general manager Bill Bavasi and manager John McLaren.
There seemed to be hope on Saturday as the Mariners were headed to a second straight win under interim manager Jim Riggleman. However, with closer J.J. Putz on the disabled list, Miguel Batista was forced into action and blew the save as Brian McCann delivered a game-winning single to give Atlanta a 5-4 victory.
It was the first come-from-behind win in 30 games for Atlanta, which improved its exceptional home record to 26-12 - the third-best mark in baseball. While Atlanta has no problem winning at home, Hudson (7-5, 3.17 ERA) cannot seem to win regardless of where he pitches.
The righthander is winless in his last five starts - four of which have come on the road. Hudson was tagged for six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 7-5 loss to Texas on Tuesday. Hudson has not won since May 27.
Seattle sends out Carlos Silva (3-8, 5.79), who is one of the team's failed free agent endeavors. Silva has struggled to live up to the four-year, $48 million free agent contract he signed this offseason, losing his last six starts and going winless since April 17.
