Struggling Blue Jays begin three-game set against Reds
Jun 24, 2008 - 12:27 PM Cincinnati Reds (35-42) at Toronto Blue Jays (36-41), 7:05 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays received some good news going into Tuesday's opener of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.
Injured pitcher Shaun Marcum visited Dr. James Andrews and was told what Toronto had already knew - that he was suffering from strained ligaments around the elbow and forearm. Andrews gave Marcum the go-ahead to begin a throwing program as soon as Saturday.
The bad news for Toronto, however, is that it lost seven straight before defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday to avoid a sweep.
Due to the slide, the Blue Jays are now in the basement of the tight American League East Division.
After dropping five consecutive games, Cincinnati took two of three games against the hot New York Yankees to begin its three-city, nine-game road trip.
Bronson Arroyo (4-6, 5.55 ERA) precedes aces Aaron Harang and Edinson Volquez, who are scheduled to start Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Opponents are hitting .324 off Arroyo in June, where he has a putrid 5.98 ERA.
His counterpart, A.J. Burnett (6-7, 5.42), will need to step up while Marcum begins a probably short rehab assignment.
Burnett, who has been the subject of many trade discussions to serious contenders such as the Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and even the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been very inconsistent. He has walked 46 in 91 1/3 innings and has failed to win three in a row this season.
Perhaps Tuesday will can erase his last outing, which he allowed eight runs in five innings to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds' offense ranks 14th in the NL and rookie sensation Jay Bruce is suffering through a 4-for-32 slump.
