Road record helps Angels top standings

Jun 24, 2008 - 12:30 PM LA Angles (47-30) at Washington (30-48) 7:10 p.m. EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim own the best record in the American League on the strength of their performance away from home this season.

The Angels' road success will likely continue on Tuesday when they meet the Washington Nationals for the middle contest of a three-game interleague series.

Anaheim (47-30), which owns a five-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the AL West Division, picked up its fourth straight win on Monday during a 3-2 victory over the Nationals in the series opener. Each of those victories have come on the road as the team improved to a major league-best 25-12 away from Angels Stadium in 2008.

The Angels have won nine of their last 10 road games overall and are just one of five teams to own a winning record outside of their home park.

Washington, conversely, has lost three straight and seven of their last eight games at Nationals Park and are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the second worst home record in the majors at 15-24.

Shawn Hill (1-4, 5.22 ERA) tries to reverse that trend when he takes the mound for the Nationals on Tuesday.

Hill, 27, was pounded for seven runs - six earned - and 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings, suffering his third loss in his last four starts during Thursday's 9-3 setback to the Minnesota Twins.

Jon Garland (6-4, 4.06) counters for the Angels after winning each of his last three decisions on the road to improve to 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA away from home this season.
