Mets' 3B Wright earns day off

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- All-Star third baseman David Wright gets a much needed rest on Tuesday when the New York Mets continue a three-game interleague series against the Seattle Mariners.

Wright is the only player in the majors to play in every inning this season, but the grind is beginning to take its toll. The 2007 Gold Glove winner is batting just .153 (2-for-13) during his last five games and committed his first error in 28 contests during Monday's 5-2 loss to the Mariners in the series opener.

The 25-year-old Wright leads the team with 12 home runs and 56 RBI and has no problem following orders from new manager Jerry Manuel, who took over when Willie Randolph was fired last week.

"Jerry knows the game," Wright said. "I'll just go out there, get a blow and hopefully come back fresh."

With their best hitter out of the lineup, the Mets will rely heavily on Oliver Perez (5-4, 5.06 ERA) to deliver a strong start.

Perez allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings, walking three while striking out two but did not factor in the decision during Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

R.A. Dickey (1-3, 5.57) counters for the Mariners after being routed in his last three appearances. The 33-year-old knuckleballer has allowed 14 runs and 16 hits in 7 1/3 innings, earning an 0-2 record over that span.
