Mets, Yankees set for 'Subway Series' doubleheader

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees and the New York Mets will treat two separate boroughs to major league baseball on Friday, starting a doubleheader in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees may not be the most well-rested bunch when they take the field in the opener. The club's game at Pittsburgh on Thursday night was halted in the third inning due to rain. Two hours, 31 minutes later, the contest was postponed.

"We can't stay here until 2 or 3 in the morning and then play a doubleheader," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think they made the right decision."

The Yankees have lost three of their last four games, dropping two of three at home to the Cincinnati Reds last weekend and splitting the first two games of the series at Pittsburgh.

The Mets were crushed by a combined 16-2 in the first two games of a series against the Seattle Mariners - the worst team in the majors - this week, but rebounded to take the series finale on Wednesday, 8-2. Mets' third baseman David Wright had been struggling, but found his swing with a pair of home runs in the win.

Wright and company will take their hacks in the opener of Friday's twin bill against 31-year-old rookie Dan Giese (1-2, 0.64 ERA). The righthander made his first major league start Saturday against the Reds and allowed three unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Giese was instructed to fly home ahead of the team on Thursday, but the hurler instead spent eight hours at Pittsburgh International Airport after he missed his flight.

The Mets will counter with righthander Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 4.30). The 24-year-old has won each of his past two starts after a 10-start winless streak. He allowed three hits in 5 2/3 scoreless frames to earn a win against the Rockies on Sunday.
