Bonine, Tigers close in on .500

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers have slowly climbed back to respectability.

Rookie Eddie Bonine and the Tigers aim for their third straight victory when they face the Colorado Rockies in interleague play Friday.

Detroit edged St. Louis, 3-2 in 10 innings Thursday to take the rubber match of its three-game set. It was the fifth straight series the Tigers have won and they are within two games of the .500 mark. It's the closet Detroit has been to .500 this season since being 14-15 on May 1.

Detroit, which has won nine of 10 here and closed within five games of the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox, hand the ball to Bonine (1-0, 5.84 ERA), who makes his third career start.

The righthander allowed two runs over seven innings but did not earn a decision in a 6-2 loss at San Diego last Friday.

The Rockies, who have dropped four straight, counter with Ubaldo Jimenez (2-7, 4.52).

The 24-year-old righthander gave up a run and two hits in eight innings during a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets last Saturday.

The Rockies are 9-3 all-time against the Tigers.
