Tigers eye winning record for first time this season
Jun 29, 2008 - 1:05 PM Colorado (32-49) at Detroit (40-40) 1:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers took their time reaching the break even mark and needed to ride out a wild game Saturday to get there.
The Tigers aim to climb over the .500 mark for the first time this season on Sunday when they target a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
Detroit dropped its first seven games this season, and was not able to string together any long stretch of consistency to make up for its slow start until recently.
The Tigers won their fifth straight game and for the 16th time in 20 games on Saturday, recovering from the anguish of losing a three-run, ninth-inning lead - and closer Todd Jones' first blown save of the season - when Miguel Cabrera hit a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 comeback win.
On Sunday, Detroit will ask Kenny Rogers (5-5, 4.60 ERA) to rebound from a poor outing in his last turn. In Tuesday's 8-4 setback to St. Louis, the lefthander took the loss after surrendering five runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings, halting his six-game unbeaten streak.
Rogers will be opposed by rookie Greg Reynolds (2-5, 5.68), who has lost four of his past six starts. The righthander permitted three runs and six hits over seven innings in a 3-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday.
