Giants, Athletics finish up interleague battle
Jun 29, 2008 - 1:08 PM San Francisco (35-46) at Oakland (44-36), 4:05 p.m. EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics host the San Francisco Giants Sunday in the finale of the "Battle of the Bay."
The Athletics have dominated the bay area rivalry recently, winning nine of the last 11 meetings between the clubs, but the Giants are coming off a rare win after claiming a 1-0 win on Saturday.
Tim Lincecum struck out 11 while allowing just five hits in seven dominant innings and Fred Lewis scampered home with the game's lone run in the fourth inning on Oakland first baseman Daric Barton's throwing error.
Jonathan Sanchez (7-4, 3.98 ERA) will try to match Lincecum's effort in the series finale and give San Francisco its second win in six chances against the A's this season. Sanchez is coming off a dominant win in which he allowed just one run while striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings at Cleveland.
The 25-year-old lefthander has appeared against Oakland five times in his brief career - all out of the bullpen. He has yielded four hits and two runs while striking out seven in 6 2/3 career frames lifetime against Oakland.
Oakland will counter with righthander Joe Blanton (4-10, 4.58). The hefty Blanton is tied for the American League lead with 10 losses despite allowing three runs or less in 10 of his 17 starts.
Blanton, who is 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA in four starts against the Giants, picked up the win his last time out, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.
