Braves attempt rare road series win vs. Blue Jays
Jun 29, 2008 - 1:19 PM Atlanta (40-42) at Toronto (39-43) 1:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves will be looking for just their third road series win of the season when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
The Braves have been masterful at home in 2008, going 28-14 at Turner Field, and are outscoring their opponents by a 41-run margin overall - good for third best in the National League.
But the road has been a constant struggle. In 11 total road series of three or more games before this weekend, Atlanta had been swept three times and lost six other times, securing its only wins at Washington in April and at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim earlier this month.
They were also swept in a two-game series at Washington in April. Atlanta is 12-28 overall away from home.
The Braves got off on the right foot in Toronto, claiming the series opener, 4-0, as Jair Jurrjens allowed just three hits in eight innings and Mark Teixeira homered and drove in three runs. Teixeira hit another blast in Saturday's game, but it was not enough as the Blue Jays pounded out 12 hits in a 9-5 victory.
Atlanta will attempt to win the rubber game with youngster Jo-Jo Reyes (3-5, 4.48 ERA) on the mound. The 23-year-old lefthander is coming off his worst start of the season Monday against the Brewers in which he surrendered four runs and six hits in just 2 1/3 innings.
In four starts away from Turner Field this season, Reyes is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA.
Toronto will counter with righthander A.J. Burnett (7-7, 5.07). The subject of numerous trade rumors, Burnett has had trouble maintaining his consistency of late, allowing eight earned runs twice in his last four starts while surrendering a total of three in his other two outings.
Burnett spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Florida Marlins and owns a 4-9 career mark with a 4.03 ERA in 17 games against Atlanta.
