Buehrle, White Sox aim for series sweep against Cubs
Jun 29, 2008 - 1:29 PM Chi Cubs (49-32) at Chi White Sox (45-35) 8:05 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Mark Buehrle and the Chicago White Sox are looking for complete payback.
Buehrle and the White Sox aim for a three-game sweep of the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs when the teams meet Sunday night.
Thanks to a tie-breaking solo homer by Carlos Quentin in the seventh inning Saturday, the White Sox edged Cubs, 6-5 to take the first two games of this bitter interleague rivalry. Jermaine Dye and rookie Alexi Ramirez also went deep for the White Sox, who are looking for revenge after the Cubs swept three games from them at Wrigley Field last weekend.
The South siders, who trail the all-time series 33-32, send Buehrle (5-6, 4.04 ERA) to the mound on Sunday.
The 29-year-old lefthander, who is 3-0 with a 1.41 ERA in his last four starts, yielded only a run and six hits in eight innings in a 6-1 victory over the Los Angels Dodgers last Tuesday. Buehrle not only seeks to even his overall record this season but also wants to get to .500 (3-4) after nine career starts vs. the Cubs.
The Cubs, losers of a season-high five straight on the road, counter with Sean Marshall (0-1, 5.40 ERA), who looks to rebound after suffering a loss in his first start of the season.
The 25-year-old lefthander gave up four runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in a 7-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles last Tuesday. Marshall is 1-1 in two career starts vs. the White Sox.
The Cubs are 0-2 on a season-high 10-game road trip.
