Cubs aim to snap four-game skid vs. Giants
Jun 30, 2008 - 12:00 PM Chicago (49-33) at San Francisco (36-46), 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs attempt to avoid a fifth straight loss Monday when they visit the San Francisco Giants for the opener of a four-game series.
The Cubs were swept by the rival Chicago White Sox over the weekend, suffering a 5-1 loss Sunday in the series finale. The were outscored by a 21-9 margin during the three-game interleague set.
Ted Lilly (8-5, 4.74 ERA), who is looking to win his third straight decision, will try to reverse the club's recent trend. The lefthander gave up four runs and five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings during Wednesday's 7-4 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.
The Giants and starter Barry Zito (3-11, 5.91) will hope to build off Sunday's 11-1 rout of the Oakland Athletics in the finale of the "Bay Bridge Series."
Zito, who leads the majors in losses, is coming off his most impressive outing of the season. The lefthander gave up one run and four hits with no walks and four strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
It is the first meeting between the two clubs this season. The Cubs won five of their seven games against the Giants last season.
