Halladay eyes ninth win against suddenly surging Mariners

Jun 30, 2008 - 12:23 PM Toronto (40-43) at Seattle (31-50) 10:10 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Looking for their third straight victory, the Toronto Blue Jays send workhorse Roy Halladay to the mound Monday against the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series.

Halladay (8-6, 3.12 ERA), who leads the majors with 121 1/3 innings pitched and five complete games this season, will try to become the first Blue Jays pitcher to reach the nine-win mark. A.J. Burnett and Shaun Marcum also have eight wins.

Burnett struck out a season-high 11 over seven dominant innings as the Blue Jays blanked the Atlanta Braves, 1-0, on Sunday

The 31-year-old Halladay, who failed to win in each of his last three starts after winning four consecutive, faces a tough task against the suddenly red-hot Mariners.

Seattle is on a three-game winning streak and have won five of its previous six contests. Perennial All-Star Ichiro Suzuki collected five hits Sunday as the Mariners cruised a 9-2 victory over the San Diego Padres to complete the sweep.

Mariners starter R.A. Dickey (2-3, 4.79) is coming off his best start of the season. The righthander pitched seven strong innings during Tuesday's 11-0 win over the New York Mets, yielding six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
