Johnson hopes to avoid longest losing streak in 16 years

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- After posting his 288th career victory in mid-May, Randy Johnson may have considered the possibility of joining the 300-win club this season. More than a month later, he still searching for his next one.

Johnson attempts to rebound from a disastrous June when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue their three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers.

After dropping each of his five starts last month, Johnson (4-6, 4.94 ERA) will try to avoid his longest losing streak since dropping eight straight from May 26-July 21, 1992, while he was still with Seattle. The lefthander hasn't won since defeating Detroit on May 18.

The first loss of that slide came on June 3 in a 7-1 setback against Milwaukee, a team against which he is 18-8 against with a 3.46 ERA in 31 career starts.

Johnson once again failed to receive much help from his offense, which hasn't scored any more than three runs in any of his outings during the losing streak. Such was the case again in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to Boston when he allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings.

The Brewers will attempt to prolong Johnson's misery when they send Jeff Suppan (4-6, 4.05) to the mound. The righthander, who will attempt to halt his three-game skid, permitted four runs and nine hits over six frames in Wednesday's 4-2 setback at Atlanta.
