Cubs look to build momentum on road
Jul 1, 2008 - 3:25 PM Chi Cubs (50-33) at San Francisco (36-47), 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Looking for some consistency on the road, the Chicago Cubs try to build on Monday's 9-2 victory in San Francisco.
After getting swept by the Chicago White Sox, the Cubs rode a big game from Mark DeRosa to snap a season-high four-game losing streak Monday and improve to just 17-23 on the road. The win also ended Chicago's six-game
slide away from the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
With Aramis Ramirez sidelined to attend to a family matter, DeRosa hit two home runs and drove in
six runs to power the Cubs.
DeRosa, who had three hits, connected on a two-run shot in the fifth inning to give Chicago a 5-0 advantage and struck again in the eighth, crushing a grand slam over the center field wall for his 10th home run of the season to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Cubs start Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96 ERA), who was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in Thursday's 11-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The defeat ended Marquis' five-game winning streak.
Matt Cain (4-6, 4.44) takes the mound for San Francisco, which owns the worst home record in the majors at 14-25. The Giants have dropped 15 of their last 18 contests at AT&T Park.
The 23-year-old Cain surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings during Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
