Tigers, Twins meet in rubber game

Jul 2, 2008 - 12:44 PM Detroit (42-41) at Minnesota (46-38) 1:10 p.m. EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Two of the hottest teams in the majors square off Wednesday when the Minnesota Twins host the Detroit Tigers in the rubber match of a three-game set.

The Tigers took the series opener, 5-4, on Monday to push their winning streak to six games and earn their 18th victory in 22 games.

Not to be outdone, the Twins went to work on Tuesday - using a three-run homer from former Detroit outfielder Craig Monroe to snap their division rival's streak and earn their 14th win in the last 17 tries.

Minnesota and Detroit are almost mirror images of each other from a statistical stand point this season, with the Twins scoring 404 runs and allowing 394 while the Tigers have put 402 on the board and let in 399. How they have gone about scoring, however, has been slightly different, as Detroit ranks 11th in the majors with 89 home runs and Minnesota sitting in 28th with 58 blasts.

Both teams will turn to a rookie pitcher in the finale, with Nick Blackburn (6-4, 4.05 ERA) getting the ball for the Twins. The righthander is coming off a terrible start at Milwaukee on Friday in which he allowed six runs, including four home runs, in 4 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.

Blackburn started at Detroit on April 14, allowing four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3, again taking a no decision.

The Tigers will send Eddie Bonine (2-0, 3.98) to the the mound for his fourth major league start. The 26-year-old righthander has improved in each of his outings, culminating with an eight-inning, one-run effort to win Friday against Colorado.
