Reds' Arroyo looking to build on victory

Jul 4, 2008 - 12:59 PM Washington (34-53) at Cincinnati (40-47) 1:15 p.m. EDT

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Cincinnati Reds starter Bronson Arroyo tries to build on a rare win when he takes the mound against the Washington Nationals on Friday.

Arroyo (5-7, 6.19 ERA) has struggled this season and hit rock bottom two starts ago when he was pounded for 10 runs and 11 hits in just one inning as the Reds suffered a 14-1 drubbing by the Toronto Blue Jays on June 24.

However, the 31-year-old righthander bounced back during his last start, surrendering just two runs - one earned - and five hits in six innings, walking two while striking out six to earn his first win since May 28 during Sunday's 9-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

To keep the momentum going, Arroyo will have to overcome a 1-4 record and 5.16 ERA in eight home starts this season.

Jason Bergmann (1-5, 4.26) counters for the Nationals seeking his first win since May 15. Bergmann, 26, has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts but hasn't gotten any support from his team as Washington has scored just seven runs over that span.
