Rangers return to site of biggest blowout in 110 years

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers return to Baltimore to face the Orioles for the first time since a historic blowout when the teams open a three-game series Friday.

In the second game of a doubleheader, the Rangers scored nine runs in the sixth inning, 10 runs in the eighth and six more in the ninth en route to a 30-3 thrashing of the Orioles on August 22.

Texas, which got seven RBI from both Ramon Vazquez and Jarrod Saltalamachia, became the first team to score 30 runs in a game since the Chicago Colts walloped Louisville, 36-7, in 1897.

Vicente Padilla (10-4, 4.13 ERA) gets the ball for the Rangers, who return to the scene of the biggest blowout in American League history licking their own wounds after an 18-7 loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday. Padilla had won three straight starts before allowing seven runs and seven hits in six innings of an 8-6 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.

Baltimore is coming off a 10-7 loss to Kansas City on Thursday in which it got a pair of home runs from Aubrey Huff, but saw a 7-3 lead evaporate in a seven-run sixth inning. The Orioles, who split the four-game series, counter with Jeremy Guthrie (4-7, 3.50)

Guthrie has just two wins in his last nine starts despite a 2.86 ERA in that span.
