Hernandez, Twins look to stay hot, face Indians
Jul 4, 2008 - 1:20 PM CLEVELAND (37-48) at MINNESOTA (47-38), 7:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The surging Minnesota Twins hope to get Livan Hernandez back on track.
Hernandez and the Twins aim for their fourth win in five games when they open a three-game series with the slumping Cleveland Indians on Friday.
Minnesota won for the 13th time in 15 games Wednesday, rolling to a 7-0 victory over Detroit.
Hernandez (8-5, 5.22 ERA) has been struggling, losing three of his last five starts. The burly righthander allowed five runs and seven hits over seven innings in a 5-1 loss to Milwaukee last Saturday.
The 33-year-old Cuban did not fare well against the Indians in his only career start against them. Hernandez was tagged for seven runs and 12 hits - two home runs - in just three-plus innings in a 12-2 defeat to Cleveland on June 12.
The Indians, losers of five straight, counter with Paul Byrd (3-9, 5.26), who has lost his last four starts.
The 37-year-old righthander most recently gave up four runs and six hits in six innings of a 5-0 loss to Cincinnati last Saturday. However, Byrd does have a 10-4 career record in 18 starts against the Twins.
Cleveland and Minnesota have split their six games this season, with the Twins winning two of three at home April 18-20.
