Perry likely in lineup for Braves after successful debut
Jul 5, 2008 - 1:14 PM Houston (40-47) at Atlanta (41-46) 7:10 p.m. EDTATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Perry made the most of his major league debut.
Perry and the Atlanta Braves eye a second straight win on Saturday when they continue a three-game series against the Houston Astros.
The 27-year-old Perry smacked a run-scoring triple in the second inning of Friday's 6-2 victory as the Braves snapped a five-game losing streak. The former Georgia Tech star replaced fellow Atlanta-area native Jeff Francoeur in the lineup after the struggling right fielder was optioned to Class AA Mississippi earlier Friday. Francoeur was mired in an 8-for-66 slump prior to his demotion.
Perry roped the eighth pitch he saw from Astros starter Brian Moehler to right field, becoming the first player in Atlanta history to record a triple in his first big league at-bat. Conversely, Francoeur saw just seven pitches total during an 0-for-4 performance on Thursday.
Perry likely earned himself a spot in Saturday's lineup and will try to duplicate his success against Astros starter Chris Sampson (3-3, 5.08 ERA), who replaces Roy Oswalt on the mound after the Houston ace's start was moved back until Tuesday while he recovers from an abductor strain.
Jo-Jo Reyes (3-6, 4.15 ERA) counters for the Braves, seeking his first win in four starts after receiving just two runs of support over his last three outings.
