Hairston powers Padres past Diamondbacks
Jul 6, 2008 - 4:51 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Scott Hairston blasted a pair of home runs and drove in three runs and Jake Peavy pitched seven scoreless frames as the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-2, on Saturday.Hairston, who had three hits, opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-run shot off Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis (3-4). He crushed Davis' 1-2 offering over the right field wall to give the Padres a 2-0 edge.
"Scotty is one of those guys that when he gets hot he gets hot," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Last night he pinch-hit and got the double and it carried over today. He got good swings and swung the bat well and was responsible for our first three runs by himself."
A former Diamondback, Hairston struck again in the sixth. He led off the frame with his 11th homer of the season, extending San Diego's advantage to 3-0. It was Hairston's second multi-homer game of the season and third career.
"When you come back against a former team you want to do well," Hairston said. "I think I didn't perform to my capabilities when I was given a chance here. If it is anybody's fault it was mine. Tonight, I was able to get good swings on a couple of pitches that were in the zone."
The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, Peavy (6-5) yielded three hits and two walks with six strikeouts en route to just his second win since May 3.
Peavy escaped a first-and-third jam in the second inning and retired 14 straight batters before Chad Tracy led off the seventh with a double.
"I tried to get more efficient. I threw nearly 50 pitches after two innings," Peavy said. "I can't stand giving up runs early and getting down early. I battled hard in those first two, but I found a little bit of groove and was able to throw some first-pitch strikes, which was a huge key for me to stay in the game."
Orlando Hudson delivered an RBI double in the eighth for the Diamondbacks to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the ninth for the Padres, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since June 11-12.
"It is kind of the same old theme here," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "They get a couple of runs and we have a tough time coming back. We struggled offensively again."
San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman surrendered a solo home run to Stephen Drew, but still picked up his 16th save of the season and 540th career.
Davis gave up three runs and seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over eight innings.
"I felt good and didn't really get behind a lot of hitters," Davis said. "It was two mistakes, and Scott is a guy that if you leave something up in the zone, he is not going to miss it."
