Shields aims to pitch Rays to seventh straight win

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- After a convincing sweep of the world champions, there has been no letdown for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tampa Bay aims for a seventh straight win on Sunday when it continues a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals.

Tampa Bay entered this series riding the momentum of a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox (52-38), who they lead by four games in the American League East. The young Rays could have taken the lowly Royals lightly. Instead they, continued their impressive play by posting an 11-2 victory on Friday and then riding Andy Sonnanstine to a 3-0 victory on Saturday.

The Rays, who own the best record in baseball one year after finishing with the worst mark, hope James Shields (6-5, 3.70 ERA) can keep the momentum going. Shields has won two straight starts, allowing just three runs and nine hits in his last 13 1/3 innings.

Shields, who is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in nine starts here, allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 5-4 win over the Red Sox on Monday.

The Royals, who have lost six of eight, send rookie Luke Hochevar (5-6, 4.91) to the hill. Hochevar was tagged for six runs and six hits in six innings of a 7-5 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday.
