Garland, sloppy Angels hope to rebound vs. Jays
Jul 6, 2008 - 1:16 PM Toronto (42-46) at LA Angels (52-35) 3:35 pm. EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Jon Garland takes the hill on Sunday as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim aim to bounce back from an error-filled loss in the finale of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Ace John Lackey was roughed up, and the Angels committed a season high-tying four errors in a 7-5 loss. Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in three runs for Anaheim, which nearly rallied from a four-run deficit in the ninth.
Lackey's rare poor performance put the Angels behind the eight-ball early. Garland (7-5, 3.99 ERA) hopes to put forth a better effort. The righthander is 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA over his last four starts. On Monday, Garland allowed four runs - two earned - and eight hits in six innings of a 6-1 loss to Oakland.
The Angels, who are assured of their first series win over Toronto in six years, will try and rough up Blue Jays starter Jesse Litsch. The righthander has just one win in his last seven starts, going 1-3 with a 4.33 ERA in that span.
Litsch will need to slow Vernon Wells, who hit a two-run homer on Saturday and is batting .293 with four homers and 15 RBI in 23 games since coming off the disabled list on June 7.
