Struggling Phillies look to Hamels for help

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Ace Cole Hamels takes the hill on Tuesday looking to help the Philadelphia Phillies snap a three-game skid in the opener of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Philadelphia got home runs from Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell and Geoff Jenkins but the Phillies comeback fell short in a 10-9 loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday.

Philadelphia, which has lost 12 of its last 18, hopes Hamels (9-5, 3.22 ERA) can help it get back on the right track The 24-year-old lefthander has won two straight outings, and is 5-2 with a 3.49 ERA over his last 10 starts.

On Thursday, Hamels allowed one run and five hits in 8 2/3 innings of a 4-1 win over Atlanta.

Meanwhile, St. Louis is coming off a disappointing 3-4 homestand. The Cardinals scored one run in three of the last four games, and are looking to bounce back from a 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Joel Piniero (2-4, 4.52) takes the hill looking to snap a nine-start winless streak. The righthander allowed four runs and 11 hits in five innings of a 8-7 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday.
