Blue Jays to showcase Burnett against Orioles
Jul 9, 2008 - 12:17 PM Baltimore (44-44) at Toronto (43-47), 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- A.J. Burnett may soon join CC Sabathia and Rich Harden on the list of pitchers on the move.
After the two major marquee names were dealt this week to contenders, the Toronto Blue Jays may be showcasing their righthander as they take on the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Burnett (8-8, 4.92 ERA) has been the subject of much trade talk in the past few weeks and the Jays, who are in last place in the American League East Division, have been willing to entertain offers for him because he is eligible to become a free agent at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old is coming off a rough outing against the Los Angeles Angels in which he allowed eight runs and 12 hits in seven innings. Prior to that, he surrendered just one run over two starts.
Baltimore will look to rebound from Tuesday's 7-6 loss by sending Garrett Olson (6-3. 5.04) to the mound.
Olson has gone five starts without pitching into the sixth inning and he has posted a 7.40 ERA in that span.
Baltimore's Aubrey Huff is 10-for-27 with four homers and 10 RBI in his last seven games.
The slugger hit his 18th home run Tuesday, but the Blue Jays rallied for five runs over the final three innings to escape with the one-run win.
Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan left after four innings on Tuesday with a sore right shoulder and will have an MRI Wednesday. He allowed four runs, though only two were earned, and four hits.
