Indians try to halt losing streak

DETROIT (Ticker) -- While dealing with the departure of ace CC Sabathia via trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cleveland Indians are also staring at a gloomy losing streak.

The Indians will try to avoid their first 10-game skid since 1979 in the finale of a two-game set with the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

The Indians, who have the American League's worst road record at 15-30, will send Paul Byrd (3-10, 5.53) to the mound with hopes of shutting down a Tigers offense which put up nine runs on Tuesday against starter Jeremy Sowers.

Sowers took Sabathia's turn in the rotation and was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Tigers will counter with rookie Eddie Bonine (2-1, 4.30) a day after Justin Verlander tossed a seven-inning, two-hit gem.

Bonine is coming off a rough outing against the Minnesota Twins last Wednesday, when he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Miguel Cabrera paced the Tigers' offense on Tuesday, with a home run and four hits.
