Athletics look to Blanton

Jul 9, 2008 - 12:39 PM Seattle (35-55) at Oakland (49-41) 10:05 p.m. EDT

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- With former ace Rich Harden no longer with the team, the rest of the Oakland Athletics rotation needs to pick up the slack - starting with Joe Blanton.

Blanton takes the mound on Wednesday when the Athletics continue a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

Harden, who posted a 5-1 record and a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts for the A's this season, was traded along with righthander Chad Gaudin to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for righthander Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, infielder Eric Patterson and catcher Josh Donaldson.

Oakland appears to be building toward the future but has remained competitive in the American League West Division and trails the first-place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by five games.

However, Harden's departure means the A's need help from the rest of the staff and Blanton needs to continue his recent run of success.

The 27-year-old righthander (5-11, 4.76 ERA) has won two of his last three starts after dropping four straight. He allowed just one run and six hits in seven innings, walking two while striking out five en route to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Blanton, who has the most losses of any AL hurler, will be opposed by Miguel Batista (4-10, 6.27).
