Royals hope to avoid sweep vs. Quentin, White Sox
Jul 10, 2008 - 11:12 AM Chi White Sox (52-38) at Kansas City (41-51) 8:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals look to bounce back from a pair of heartbreaking losses and avoid a three-game sweep by the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
Carlos Quentin hit a pair of two-run homers and scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the eighth inning as the White Sox rallied for a 7-6 triumph over the Royals on Wednesday. After falling behind, 6-2, through four frames, Chicago scored five unanswered runs.
Quentin, who put Chicago on the scoreboard with a two-run blast in the fourth, added another two-run shot in the sixth to draw the White Sox within 6-4. The sixth-inning blast, his 21st of the season, capped the All-Star's third multi-homer game of the season.
Kansas City, which suffered an 8-7, 13-inning loss in the series opener on Tuesday, will turn to righthander Zack Greinke to reverse its fortunes. The Royals have lost nine of their last 12.
Greinke gave up two runs and seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over six frames in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
He will be opposed by lefthander Mark Buehrle (6-7, 3.91), who is trying to rebound from his first loss in over a month. The 29-year-old gave up four runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings during Friday's 7-1 setback to the Oakland Athletics.
