Woods, Mariners hand White Sox devastating loss

Sep 22, 2006 - 3:08 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jake Woods dominated the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, dealing another blow to their fading playoff hopes.

Woods pitched a career-high seven innings and Raul Ibanez knocked in three runs as the Seattle Mariners posted a 9-0 victory over the White Sox.

Chicago (85-68) has lost six of its last seven games and failed to take advantage of losses by both Detroit and Minnesota. The White Sox remained 5 1/2 games behind the Twins (90-62) in the American League wild card race with only nine games remaining. They are six games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.

"We got to play hard. They get a lot of money to play 162 games and they should play hard," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I hope I'm wrong and I hope I'm overreacting, but we have to play hard. They should get ready to play."

The 25-year-old Woods (6-3), making his sixth career start, scattered five hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter. Joel Pineiro pitched the final two frames for the Mariners.

"Jake (Woods) was awfully good tonight," Hargrove said. "He had a real good breaking ball and his changeup was good. He threw strikes."

"I'm happy about tonight, not walking anyone," Woods said. "The goal is to get us some wins and get some momentum for next year. I feel fine. I've had some rough outings ... tough outings. But hopefully I can put some pressure on the front office for next year."

Ibanez belted his 29th homer, a solo shot in the seventh and his 1,000th career hit, off Javier Vazquez (11-10) to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the eighth, he broke open the contest with a two-run single against Neal Cotts to make it 5-0.

"It's a blessing to be able to get 1,000 hits," said Ibanez, who was able to retrieve his home run ball. "Early in my career, I would have been fortunate to get 1,000 at-bats."

One inning later, Adrian Beltre extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his ninth career grand slam, a blast off David Riske to cap the scoring.

Despite striking out 12, Vazquez allowed five runs - three earned - and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.
