Astros RHP Oswalt returns to face feeble Nationals

Jul 11, 2008 - 1:36 PM Houston (42-50) at Washington (35-58) 7:35 pm. EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Roy Oswalt returns to the hill on Friday as the Houston Astros open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals.

Oswalt has been bothered by a hip injury and was forced to skip his last start due to a nerve problem in his side. Oswalt (7-8, 4.60 ERA) aggravated the injury on June 30, when he allowed one run and six hits in six innings of a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, the Astros' ace threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session on Tuesday and reported no pain. That is good news for the Astros, who had lost seven of eight before notching a 6-4 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Oswalt, who is 3-4 with a 3.11 ERA in his last seven starts, faces the lowly Nationals. The worst offensive team in baseball, Washington also has been ravaged by injuries. The Nationals, who have scored a league-low 331 runs, have 15 players on the disabled list.

Nevertheless, Washington showed it has plenty of fight left, rallying from two- and three-run deficits before falling, 7-5, to Arizona in 11 innings on Thursday. Tim Redding (6-3, 4.06) takes the hill for the Nationals looking to avoid tying former Houston pitcher Shawn Chacon's major-league record of nine straight no-decisions.

Redding allowed one runs and eight hits in six innings of a 3-2 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday.
