Red Sox look to bounce back from rare home defeat
Jul 12, 2008 - 10:08 AM Baltimore (45-46) at Boston (55-40) 7:05 p.m. EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox will attempt to recover from their first home loss in nearly three weeks when they host the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
The Red Sox lost for just the 11th time in 45 contests this season at Fenway Park on Friday, dropping the series opener, 7-3, to the Orioles.
Brian Roberts sparked the Baltimore offense - driving in a run, scoring a pair and stealing two bases while finishing a homer shy of the cycle - and Brian Burres pitched 6 1/3 effective innings to earn the win. The victory snapped a five-game slide for Baltimore.
The setback also dropped Boston's record against American League East opponents to 18-19 this season - the only division against which the club has a losing mark.
The Red Sox will try to get back on the winning track behind knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (5-6, 3.75 ERA). The veteran righthander has been sharp of late, though it has yet to show up in the win column. Wakefield owns a 2.24 ERA over his past eight starts while limiting opponents to a .187 batting average, but is just 2-3 in that span.
He did not factor in the decision in his lone start against Baltimore this season, allowing two runs in seven innings on June 2 as Boston went on to suffer a 6-3 loss.
The Orioles will counter with struggling rookie Radhamez Liz (3-1, 5.94). The 25-year-old righthander was lifted from his last start after allowing six runs - four earned - and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
