Rays look to avoid sixth straight loss
Jul 12, 2008 - 10:09 AM Tampa Bay (55-37) at Cleveland (39-53), 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays will try to snap their season-high five-game losing streak on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.
In order to do so, they will have to solve Matt Ginter, who will make his first major league appearance since 2005 for the Indians.
Ginter's last start came on Sept. 18, 2005 against the Angels as a member of the Cleveland Indians. He gave up five runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to Paul Byrd.
The Indians need a spot starter in the wake of the CC Sabathia trade. Right-hander Fausto Carmona is still working his way back from a left hip strain and won't be available until after the All-Star break. Enter Ginter, who was 6-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 18 games, including 17 starts, at Class AAA Buffalo this year.
The 30-year-old Ginter has 92 games of big league experience, including 15 starts. He pitched for the White Sox, Mets and Tigers between 2000-05.
Matt Garza (7-4, 3.51 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts against Cleveland, will take the mound for Tampa Bay
Akinori Iwamura and Carl Crawford are a combined 5-for-50 (.100) during the Rays' losing stretch.
