Kazmir, Rays hope to end six-game skid

Jul 13, 2008 - 1:22 PM Tampa Bay (55-38) at Cleveland (40-53) 1:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays appear to be out of breath entering the final game of the season's first half.

Luckily, ace Scott Kazmir will take the mound against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, hoping to give the Rays a breath of fresh air and a chance to end their six-game losing streak.

Their current skid is the team's longest since an eight-game slide July 21-28 of last season, which they finished with the worst record in the major leagues.

Kazmir (7-4, 2.69 ERA) has been struggling lately, going 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his last six starts after winning each of his previous six.

The Indians will counter with Jeremy Sowers (0-5, 7.81) with hopes of sweeping the four-game series.

Sowers has lost each of his last four starts. In his last two outings, he has given up 15 runs in 8 2/3 innings and was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 frames in Tuesday's 9-2 loss in Detroit.

The Rays have been outscored, 26-6, in the series. Those offensive struggles have been mirrored by Carl Crawford, who is 0-for-21 in the last five games.
