Youkilis, Red Sox look to head in All-Star break on top
Jul 13, 2008 - 1:50 PM Baltimore (45-47) at Boston (56-40) 1:35 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- Kevin Youkilis and the high-powered offense of the Boston Red Sox will look to head into the All-Star break on a high note Sunday when they host the Baltimore Orioles in the finale of a three-game series.
The Red Sox will send seven players to the Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, including the first baseman Youkilis, who was voted in by the fans as a starter. He sparked an offensive onslaught in Saturday's 12-1 victory, driving in six runs and hitting a grand slam.
Youkilis is surging into the break, batting .373 with 16 RBI over his last 15 games.
J.D. Drew and Manny Ramirez, both of whom will join Youkilis in New York on Tuesday, also homered Saturday, helping to improve Boston's home record to an American League-best 35-11. The Red Sox also moved one-half game behind the Tampa Bay Rays (55-38) for first place in the AL East
Boston will send righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-1, 2.84 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. The Japanese star has put together three straight strong outings, allowing a total of eight hits and one run in his last 17.1 innings.
Matsuzaka has not faced the Orioles this season, but allowed a career-high eight runs in 2.2 innings against the division rivals last September 8.
Baltimore will counter with righthander Daniel Cabrera (6-4, 4.40). The Dominican hurler has gone 1-0 in three starts against the Red Sox this season, allowing 11 runs in 19 combined innings.
