Maholm, Pirates open second half at Rockies

DENVER (Ticker) -- Paul Maholm hopes to continue his string of strong starts when the Pittsburgh Pirates open a four-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.

Maholm (6-5, 3.93 ERA) has won his last four decisions and hasn't suffered a loss since May 20. He is 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA in his last eight starts.

The lefthander went eight innings for the second straight start, allowing two runs and seven hits in a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees on July 10.

The defending National League champion Rockies had a first half they would like to forget. They stand 81/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West .

Colorado comes in on a four-game losing streak after being swept in a three-game series by the New York Mets last weekend. The Rockies have scored two runs during the skid and were shut out in their last two contests.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-9, 4.22) hopes to get more run support . The righthander took the loss in a 3-0 defeat at Shea Stadium last Saturday, giving up three runs in six innings.

Jimenez is 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA in nine starts at Coors Field.
